THE MALARIA EPIDEMIOLOGY 2006

During the year 2006 the National centre for malaria, parasitology and entomology has made great efforts in expanding malaria control activities in collaboration with all partners such as PHD, other national programs, other Ministries/Departments and NGOs which supported health sectors at community level to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality rate to upgrade living status of the population living in very remote areas.

The CNM has implemented almost all the activities that have been planned in the Annual Work Plan , particularly in M&E plan for GFATM round 2, phase 2, year 3 (2006) and round 4, phase 1. The epidemiology unit at CNM analysed the malaria data for the year 2006 collected through the HIS system revealed the following:

·        The number of treated malaria cases in 2006 has increased dramatically when compared with the previous year 2005. Thus there have been 100,943 cases in 2006 as against 74,185 cases in 2005. This increasing number is approximately 36% compared with 2005 data.

·        The total number of malaria treated cases has increased in some provinces comparison with 2005 (See Table 1); the incidence rate has risen to 7.2 per 1000 in 2006 from 5.5 per 1000 in 2005.

·        The number of severe malaria cases from referral hospitals has as well as increased sharply approximately 71% compared with 2005 from 2560 in 2005 to 4392 cases in 2006.

·        The number of malaria deaths has also increased around 33% compared with 2005; there have been 396 deaths in 2006 as compared with 296 deaths in 2005. Malaria mortality rate has been increased slightly from 2.19 to 2.81 per 100,000 in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Case fatality rate at referral hospitals among severe malaria patients has gradually fallen to 7.9% in 2006 from 10.43% in 2005.

·        The number of confirmed cases (based on blood slide examination and dipstick tests) has shown a rapidly increased from 49,436 cases in 2005 to 78,696 cases in 2006.

·        The proportion of confirmed cases among treated cases has increased significantly in the recent years from 42.4% in 2002 to 78% in 2006.

·        The overall proportion of different parasite species in 2006 has a significant difference compared with the previous year (PF 75%, PV 23%, Mixed infection 2%) because of the proportion of Vivax decrease gradually from 33% to 23%.

·        The age-sex group of male adults between 15 and 49 years old has been more affected by malaria when compared with the other groups. 69% of the treated cases and 66% of the confirmed cases were reported in this group (similar proportion compared with 2005).
